Distritos hispanos

Spanish-speaking districts

Six linguistic districts (20–25) serve the Spanish-speaking A.A. groups of the whole Area. Each one meets in person, every week or several times a month.

“The Area is entirely covered by the Spanish-speaking Districts and also by the English-speaking Districts. Spanish-speaking Districts support the Spanish-speaking Groups and English-speaking Districts support the English-speaking Groups. Groups with other languages are supported by the English-speaking District in which they are located.”

— Area 09 districts page

District 20 was created in 1985 to serve every Spanish-speaking meeting in the Area; Districts 21 to 25 grew out of it. The Area's yearly Foro, started by the Spanish-speaking districts in 1992, is dedicated to general service.

Inter-District Meeting

Inter-District Meeting of the Spanish-speaking Districts

Districts 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 · A Sunday morning, hosted in turn by one of the six Spanish-speaking districts

  1. 8:00

    Registration and breakfast

  2. 9:00–10:30

    Workshop tables (mesas de trabajo)

  3. 10:30

    Business meeting

Registration and breakfast from 8:00 AM, workshop tables from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, then the business meeting. (Pacific time)

The six Spanish-speaking districts of Area 09 (20-25) meet together in an Interdistrict Meeting run by a Panel 76 service board (coordinator, secretary, treasurer). Each meeting is hosted by one district on a Sunday morning: registration and breakfast from 8:00 AM, workshop tables (“mesas de trabajo”) from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, then the business meeting - Serenity Prayer, the Third Legacy, introductions, minutes, correspondence, reports from each district and its committees, the Seventh Tradition and a basket for the La Viña anniversary, reports from Area 09 standing committees, officers, forums and convention liaisons, the service board and the workshop tables, and pending and new items - closing with the Responsibility Declaration. A DCM’s new item goes straight to discussion and vote if it was discussed in the district and submitted in a letter signed and sealed by the district service board; a motion from the floor must be seconded by another DCM. A separate Hispanic intradistrict session holds the workshop tables, whose reports are read at the next Interdistrict Meeting.

A separate Hispanic Intradistrict session works on the workshop tables; their reports are read at the next Inter-District Meeting.

General service in brief

What is a district? What does a DCM do?

Districts are where the A.A. groups and the Area meet. This is how it works in Area 09.

  1. A.A. groups
  2. GSRs
  3. Districts
  4. Areas
  5. General Service Conference
  6. General Service Board
In A.A.'s upside-down triangle the groups are on top. Districts connect the groups' GSRs with the Area and, through the Delegate, with the General Service Conference.

What is a district?

A district brings together the A.A. groups of one part of the Area or, in a linguistic district, the groups that meet in one language. The groups’ General Service Representatives (GSRs) meet regularly to share their groups’ experience and carry their group conscience to the Area.

What does a DCM do?

The GSRs elect a District Committee Member (DCM), who becomes part of the Area committee. The pamphlet Your DCM calls the DCM “the vital link between the group’s GSR and the area service structure”: DCMs hold regular GSR meetings, keep GSRs informed about Conference activities and hold Seventh Tradition workshops.

DCM or DCMC?

Larger districts are divided into subdistricts, each with its own DCM, and a DCM Chair (DCMC) leads the district. In smaller districts one DCM/DCMC does both jobs. Every district can be reached at its Area address, such as d05dcmc@msca09aa.org.

Linguistic districts

Linguistic districts are made up of groups that hold their meetings in another language, and their boundaries can differ from those of the geographic districts. In Area 09 the six Spanish-speaking districts (20–25) together cover the whole Area.

The district committee

Alongside the DCMC, most districts elect an alternate, a secretary, a treasurer and a registrar for two-year terms that follow the Area’s panel, plus chairs for local service committees such as Public Information, CPC, Literature, Grapevine and Archives.

Are you a GSR?

Your district meeting is where your group’s voice joins the rest of the Area. Come to your district’s business meeting (many districts hold an orientation or GSR School just before it) and bring your group’s questions and ideas.

How the district numbers came about

  1. 1959

The Area begins with ten districts (1–10), 105 meetings and 105 GSRs.

  2. 1961

Districts 11 (from District 8), 12 and 13 are created. District 13 later merges into District 2.

  3. 1972–1980

    Districts 14 (1972), 15 and 16 (1975), 17 (1978) and 19 (1980) are formed; 14, 17 and 19 come from District 8.

  4. 1985

District 20 is created to serve all the Spanish-speaking meetings of the Area.

  5. 1987–1995

    Spanish-speaking Districts 21 (1987), 22 (1988), 23 (1991) and 24 (1995) are formed from District 20, and District 30 from District 9 (1988).

  6. 1989–1996

District 16 merges into District 10 (1989). District 31, formed from District 30, merges into District 9 (1996).

  7. 2008

District 25 is formed from District 24.

  8. 2020

    District 3 begins meeting with District 1 as District 1 & 3.

  9. 2023

District 11 becomes inactive and joins District 8.

Looking for an A.A. meeting?

Districts are service bodies: they don't run recovery meetings or keep meeting lists. Local central offices and intergroups do, and many of them answer the phone around the clock.
