Have an idea for the Conference?

Anything that concerns A.A. as a whole can become a proposed agenda item. The trustees' committees review every proposal, and the ones accepted go on the Conference agenda.

Who can propose

  • Any A.A. member
  • Groups
  • Area assemblies
  • Area committee members
  • Delegates & trustees
  • AAWS & Grapevine directors and staff

How

  1. 1Talk it over with your group and your DCM.
  2. 2Write down the idea and why it matters for A.A. as a whole, with any background.
  3. 3Send it to the General Service Office — aa.org has the form, and the Delegate can help.

Proposals usually need to arrive by September 30 to be considered for the following year's Conference; later ones go to the Conference after that.

How the Area gets ready

The Pre-Conference process

Our Delegate goes to New York carrying the informed conscience of Area 09's groups. This is how we get there each spring.

  1. 1

    Workgroups study the agenda

Volunteers form workgroups that follow the Conference committees — Public Information, Literature, Finance, Treatment and more — and prepare packets in English and Spanish.

  2. 2

    District boot camps

Districts host workshops where GSRs go through the agenda items together.

  3. 3

    Spanish inter-district Pre-Conference

The Spanish-speaking districts hold their own session on the agenda.

  4. 4

    GSRs take it home

Each GSR shares the items with the group and brings back its conscience.

  5. 5

    The mock conference

At the April Area meeting the Area discusses the items as a mock Conference while the Delegate listens.

  6. 6

The Delegate goes to New York

Informed by the Area, the Delegate votes as a member of the Conference — in the best interests of A.A. as a whole.

Conference background material is confidential: it is shared only with Conference members and the people helping the Delegate, and it is never posted on this website.
