What this committee does

“Our mission is to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to communities where barriers may exist because of language, culture, geography, technology, socio-economics, and/or gender.”

Remote Communities works so that A.A. is available to alcoholics in underserved or remote communities — the desert and mountain towns of our Area, tribal lands, language and cultural communities, and anywhere a meeting is hard to reach. It focuses on overcoming barriers of geography, language and culture. It began as an Area ad hoc committee in 2020 and is now a standing committee of the Assembly.

Its work in Area 09

  • Identify underserved and remote communities in the Area and help start or support meetings there — in person, by phone or online.
  • Reach leaders in ethnic and cultural communities with literature, PSAs and presentations.
  • Provide service reports and information in accessible formats so remote groups stay connected to the Area.
  • Hold Remote Communities workshops at group, district and Area level, and at conventions and service events.
  • Share the Loners-Internationalists Meeting (LIM) correspondence service with members who cannot get to meetings.

How to get involved

Any A.A. member who lives in, or cares about, an isolated community is welcome. Write to the English or Spanish chair for the current meeting schedule. The committee reports at every ASC and Assembly.

How it is organized

English- and Spanish-language chairs elected by the Assembly with the other standing-committee chairs (five years of sobriety suggested). The committee has no written Area guidelines on file yet.
