Cooperation with the Elder Community

Carrying the message to the older alcoholic.

English & SpanishEvery 4th Thursday · 10:15–11:45 AM

What this committee does

The CEC Committee carries the message to the older alcoholic — A.A. members and those who may still be suffering. Elders are a growing part of our membership, and the committee helps Area 09 groups and districts lower the physical and technological barriers that lead to isolation. Area 09 added this standing committee in 2005.

Its work in Area 09

  • Make presentations to physicians, geriatric professionals, residential-facility staff and health-care providers, and at non-A.A. events.
  • Place A.A. literature (print and digital) where elders gather — senior centers, retirement communities, AARP events, geriatric conferences and doctors’ waiting rooms.
  • Help elders get online: clear instructions for joining virtual meetings by computer or landline, and encourage closed-captioned meetings.
  • Work with intergroups to label “Accessible/Senior Friendly” meetings in meeting directories.
  • Encourage volunteer programs that keep in touch with homebound elders and help them get to meetings; promote Grapevine/La Viña subscriptions for isolated elders.
  • Hold workshops in English and Spanish with the Literature, Accessibilities, Grapevine/La Viña, Technology, PI and CPC committees.

How to get involved

The goal is a representative from every Area 09 district (two years of sobriety suggested), and every interested member is welcome. The committee meets on Zoom on the 4th Thursday of each month, 10:15–11:45 AM, and at Area meetings (except the May Assembly).

How it is organized

Chairperson elected by the Area Assembly for one two-year term starting January 1 of even years (may also finish an unexpired term); an Alternate Chair appointed by the committee; a Secretary elected by the committee. The chair submits a historical report at the end of the term and a budget to the Finance Committee each September.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a meeting "Senior Friendly"?

An accessible room (per the SMF-208 checklist), a volunteer who keeps in touch with elders and helps with rides or getting online, a suggestion box, and — for virtual meetings — clear joining instructions, phone access and closed captions. Most important: the meeting is clearly marked in the directory.

How is CEC different from Accessibilities?

They work side by side. Accessibilities serves every alcoholic facing a barrier; CEC focuses on older alcoholics and on cooperating with the professionals and facilities that serve them.
