Standing committee

Literature

Let literature carry the message, too.

English & SpanishMeets at the Area meeting

What this committee does

Since the Big Book was published in 1939, literature has carried the A.A. message alongside one alcoholic talking to another. The Literature Committee makes Conference-approved literature known and available across Area 09, encourages members to read it, and develops, translates and publishes the Area’s own literature in English and Spanish.

Its work in Area 09

  • Bring the Area literature display to every in-person Area meeting and keep it current with Conference-approved books, pamphlets and audiovisual material.
  • Encourage members to read and buy Conference-approved literature through central offices and the A.A. online store (the Area does not sell literature, so it never competes with central offices).
  • Consider proposed additions and changes to Conference-approved literature and service material.
  • Publish the Area’s own literature in English and Spanish: the MSCA Workbook, the “What’s It All About?” pamphlet and the Third Legacy Procedure pamphlet.
  • Update the Area Guidelines for Structure and Procedure after the Assembly changes them.
  • Review and edit other committees’ literature when asked.

How to get involved

The committee officers and any MSCA member interested in literature. It meets before Area Assemblies and ASC meetings, or as the chairs arrange.

How it is organized

An English-speaking Chair and a Spanish-speaking Chair with equal responsibilities, elected in January of even years at the first Assembly of the panel (five years of sobriety suggested); each oversees the election of a Secretary. Both chairs are voting members of the Assembly and ASC. A Spanish translation subcommittee coordinator handles MSCA translations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy literature at Area meetings?

No. The Area does not sell literature — that would compete with our central offices and the Area does no fundraising. The display shows what is available; buy through your central office or the A.A. online store.
