Standing committeePI
Public Information
Accurate information about A.A. for the public — with anonymity protected.
What this committee does
Like all of A.A., Public Information’s primary purpose is to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers. P.I. committees make accurate information about A.A. available to the general public and the media — by speaking, with Conference-approved literature, through video and digital media, and by working with the press — while protecting the anonymity of our members. P.I. also helps keep the Fellowship itself well informed.

Its work in Area 09
- Speak about A.A. at schools, community organizations and other non-A.A. meetings.
- Make sure every public library has Conference-approved books, and place literature racks and meeting schedules in schools, police stations, hospitals and hotels.
- Work with local media: public-service announcements, holiday notices of open meetings and anonymity-protected interviews.
- Help members understand anonymity at the public level and A.A.'s public-information policy.
- Support district P.I. representatives and share their experience; coordinate with CPC, Corrections and Treatment so projects are not duplicated.
- Hold P.I. workshops with CPC and take part in regional events such as the Pacific Region P.I. Forum.
How to get involved
Area P.I. officers, district P.I. representatives and any interested member with sound sobriety and a good knowledge of the A.A. program — public-relations experience isn’t needed. Meetings are monthly or as needed, often before ASCs and Assemblies, and are announced in the newsletter.
How it is organized
Co-chairpersons — one from the Hispanic community — nominated and elected by the Area Assembly; an Alternate Chair; and a Secretary (or Secretary-Treasurer) elected by the committee. Two-year terms beginning in January of even years. Responsible to the Assembly and the Area officers.
When we meet
Meets during the Area meeting break-out
The Area meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month, 9 AM–3 PM, in person and on Zoom; registration opens at 8 AM. Committees meet in break-out rooms during the meeting — ask at the registration table where yours is.

Frequently asked questions
A reporter wants to interview me about A.A. What do I do?
Contact the P.I. committee first. If you speak, do it as an A.A. member at the level of press, radio, TV and online media without full name or face (Tradition Eleven), and speak only for yourself, never for A.A.
What does a district P.I. committee do?
Experience shared on the old P.I. page includes: Big Books in every public library, literature racks in schools and hospitals, letters offering presentations to high schools and senior centers, and listing open meetings in local media at the holidays.
