What this committee does

DCM School trains District Committee Members (DCMs), District Committee Member Chairs (DCMCs) and anyone interested in those jobs — positions that come with little written guidance. It gathers the experience of past and current DCMs and DCMCs so districts stay healthy and the informed group conscience of each district reaches the Delegate and the Area.

Its work in Area 09

  • Hold DCM School classes during Area Assemblies and ASC meetings (committee break-out, 10:15–11:30 AM), plus optional online “outside” meetings.
  • Develop and maintain a training course based on DCM-related A.A. literature and service material: the A.A. Service Manual, “Your D.C.M.” (F-12), the DCM Kit, Advisory Actions and the Area’s own DCM pamphlets.
  • Give experienced members a forum to share — visiting home groups, the DCM’s relationship to the district and the Area, and the Conference process.
  • Help with the yearly Four-Area DCM Sharing Session with Areas 05, 08 and 93.
  • Maintain the DCMC Workbook and the DCM School app.

How to get involved

Every DCM, DCMC, alternate and interested member is invited — bring your problems and solutions. To vote in the committee, attend at least one DCM School meeting during the current panel.

How it is organized

The Chair is elected by the DCM School Committee and approved by the January Area Assembly of even years; the Alternate Chair and Secretary are elected by the committee at its next meeting. Suggested: five years of continuous sobriety and two years’ experience as a DCM for the Chair. The Chair (or the Alternate in the Chair’s absence) votes at Assemblies and ASCs. Quorum: 50% of voting members.

Frequently asked questions

I was just elected DCM. Where do I start?

Come to DCM School at the next Area meeting (10:15 AM break-out), read “Your D.C.M.” (F-12) and the DCM chapter of the A.A. Service Manual, and ask an experienced DCM to be your service sponsor.
