Coordinate committeeH&I

Hospitals & Institutions

Taking A.A. meetings to people who cannot get to one.

What this committee does

The purpose of every Hospitals & Institutions committee is the same throughout A.A.: to carry the message to alcoholics confined in a hospital or institution who cannot attend regular meetings — mostly by bringing ‘panels’ of A.A. members inside. In Southern California, H&I committees are coordinate committees: completely autonomous, but part of the Area structure. Their chairs are voting members of the Assembly, the Alternate Delegate is the Area’s liaison, and Area officers visit H&I meetings on a quarterly rotation.

Its work in Area 09

  • Take A.A. panels into jails, prisons, hospitals and treatment facilities across the Area.
  • Run orientations for new panel members at each local H&I committee’s monthly business meeting.
  • Coordinate across Southern California through the So-Cal H&I Intergroup (handisocal.org), which meets the 4th Sunday of each month.
  • Hold the annual Southern California H&I Conference and the So-Cal H&I Intergroup dinner.

How to get involved

Go to the orientation at your local H&I committee’s business meeting (see the list below). Most facilities ask for some continuous sobriety before you can go inside.

How it is organized

Each H&I committee is autonomous with its own guidelines. Area 09 has had an “H&I Liaison” seat on the Area committee (vacant in Panel 74); the Alternate Delegate serves as liaison under the Area Guidelines.

A little history

Until 2003 the Area itself had an H&I Committee; the Assembly then created separate Treatment Facilities and Correctional Facilities (now Corrections) committees, which work with the autonomous local H&I committees.

When we meet

Ten local H&I committees meet monthly. Pick the one nearest you — each listing has the place, time and how to join.
